Η λέξη μαρτυρείται από την ελληνιστική εποχή, τα χρόνια, μετά το θάνατο του Μ. Αλεξάνδρου.

Μάλιστα πρωτοεμφανίζεται ως σημεία, από την αρχαία λέξη σῆμα. Το πολύ παλιό ομηρικό σῆμα είναι το μνημείο, το σημάδι, το σύμβολο.

Η σημαία δήλωνε το στρατιωτικό σημείο, που χρησιμοποιούνταν στον πόλεμο, για να φανερώνει την ταυτότητα μιας στρατιωτικής ομάδας.
Ταυτόχρονα, όμως, η σημαία ήταν και το σώμα στρατού, που πολεμούσε κάτω από ένα συγκεκριμένο έμβλημα. 
Τη λέξη, όμως, την συναντάμε με την έννοια της εικόνας και της πανοπλίας, που έφερε σημάδια διακριτικά των πολεμιστών.

Σε κάθε περίπτωση όμως, η σημαία δείχνει, παρουσιάζει κάτι, αποτελεί το σύμβολο, το έμβλημα μια ιδέας, μιας πατρίδας, ενός έθνους, μιας αυτοκρατορίας. 
Σημαίνει την εξέχουσα σημασία του αγώνα για την ελευθερία του ελληνικού έθνους. 
Την τιμητική της έχει η γαλανόλευκη στις 25 Μαρτίου και 28 Οκτωβρίου, που είναι οι εθνικές μας επέτειοι: η πρώτη για την έναρξη του εθνικοαπελευθερωτικού αγώνα του 1821 από τους Οθωμανούς και το 1940 για τον αγώνα εναντίον Ιταλών και Γερμανών, έτσι η γαλανόλευκη κυματίζει στις οικείες και τους δημόσιους χώρους. 

Για τους νεκρούς του πολέμου η σημαία κυματίζει μεσίστια σε ένδειξη πένθους.

Από τότε έγιναν πολλά, γνωρίσαμε και άλλες πολλές σημαίες, σημαιούλες και σημαιάκια. 
Γνωρίσαμε τη σημαία της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και σημαίες νέων κρατών που προέκυψαν από τη διάσπαση μεγαλύτερων. 
Υπάρχουν τα συνώνυμα φλάμπουρο, μπαϊράκι, παντιέρα, λάβαρο. 
Μόνο, όμως, η σημαία χρησιμοποιείται, για να αποδώσει το εθνικό σύμβολο μιας χώρας. 

Στη βαθαίωνη ιστορία μας έχουμε χρησιμοποιήσει σαν λαός πολλά σύμβολα ας τα θυμηθούμε λίγο:

Η σημαία των Κολοκοτρωναίων. Σήμερα αυτή είναι η σημαία της Φινλανδίας.

Τα σύμβολα των Πόλεων Κρατών ήταν πάνω στις ασπίδες. Η ασπίδα ήταν η σημαία τους. Για τούτο έλεγαν στη Σπάρτη ''Ή ΤΑΝ Ή ΕΠΙ ΤΑΣ'' Δηλαδή ή την ασπίδα ή να σε φέρουν πάνω της.

Τα συμβολικά μοτίβα μαιάνδρου και οι παραλλαγές τους είναι εθνικά σύμβολα κι όχι διακοσμητικά όπως νομίζουν αρκετοί, είναι δε σύμβολα Οικουμενικού Ελληνισμού, προέρχονται από την προϊστορική εποχή και φτάνουν στη σύγχρονη.

Το αρχαιότατο Πελασγικό σύμβολο, προελληνικό και Πρωτοελληνικό, ονομάζεται:
 Σώστικα, γαμμάδιον, ιερά τετρακτύς, τετρασκελές. Εδώ σε Μινωικό δίσκο ιεροτελεστίας

Οι Πελασγοί Πρωτοέλληνες και τα σύμβολα τους στα πέρατα του κόσμου και σε βάθη προϊστορικά απρόσμενα.


Τα αρχαιότερα ίχνη σώστικας βρίσκονται στην Ουκρανία στην Μεζίνε χρονολογούνται στα 13.000πΧ.
